His Symphonic World

With each of his symphonies he set out to 'build a world'. Most of his contemporaries did not understand this, his works were considered too long, overloaded and confused. But Mahler had great confidence in his compositions: 'My time will come.'
Like his antipode Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler is considered a master of orchestration. Mahler made a career primarily as an opera conductor, and as director of the Vienna Court Opera, which is now the Vienna State Opera, he set exemplary standards which are admired, and upheld to this day.
