Swiss Choral life since the 19th century
In the 19th century, there was a great male voice choir movement in Switzerland, which not only encouraged socialising through song, but also cultivated the growing choral landscape, and brought together different central European cultures, out of which Switzerland evolved.
Mixed Choirs emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, to serve the popular oratorio scene, while the female voice choir took a little longer to develop. Today, choral music in Switzerland has branched out to all genres and is popular with young and old alike.
The Swiss Choral Association is the successor to the `Federal Singers Association´ founded in 1842, and is the oldest national choral association in the world.
