The cantata "Der Herr ist mein Hirte" dates back to 1731 and was apparently intended as a supplement to the Choralkantatenjahrgang, which Bach interrupted unfinished at Easter 1725. Bach adopted the five-stropic poem unchanged. The main emphasis is on the opening chorus, in which the chorale is performed line by line by the soprano in long note values, with the remaining vocal parts imitating the movement.
