Krzysztof Penderecki wrote Agnus Dei in 1981 after receiving the news of the death of his friend Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński, a symbolic figure of the spiritual resistance against the Communist regime of Poland. Later he incorporated it into his Polish Requiem. With his arrangement for eight violoncellos, Penderecki expressed his grief over the death of Mstislav Rostropovich.
