Adolphe Adam was the son of a pianist. As a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, he wrote one of the institution’s standard textbooks, which is still used to this day. He was friends with Halévy, the director of the Conservatoire, and his teachers included Reicha and Boieldieu.
Adam wrote numerous stage works, 13 ballets and 44 operas, one of which, Le Brasseur de Preston features the Narhalla March, sacred music, secular cantatas, piano pieces and chamber music. His ballets were a great influence for his pupil Delibes and for Tchaikovsky. As an opera composer, he paved the way for Offenbach’s operettas.
