Borodin was a highly trained and highly skilled chemist. He was a professor of Chemistry at the Medical Academy, and in this field, he achieved excellent results and became very famous. He therefore only devoted himself to music sporadically in his spare time. Borodin’s work is not very extensive, but it is of enormous value. In the composer’s works we not only find folk melodies and oriental themes, but also impressionist colours that are reminiscent of Claude Debussy.
Borodin’s greatest work is the great opera Prince Igor, on which he worked for almost 18 years, without ever fully completing it. The theme of the opera is the Russian epic ’The Word About Igor’s Regiment’, to whose hero Borodin felt very close. Prince Igor is one of the greatest works of Russian music, not only because of its patriotism and pride, but also because of its musical quality and innovation. Other notable works include two symphonies, two string quartets, and various chamber music.
