Anton Reicha – Sheet Music & Scores

Anton Reicha (also known by Antonín or Antoine Rejcha, 1770-1836) was one of the most important Czech classical musicians of his time. Well-known as a composer, and even more so as a music teacher and music theorist, his work at the Paris Conservatoire had a direct impact on a whole generation of aspiring French Romantic composers. Browse our sheet music and scores, and discover all his brilliant and contrasting works today!

From Bohemia to Paris

Anton Reicha was the son of Šimon Rejcha, a street musician from Prague. At the age of 11, after the death of his father, Anton ran away from his mother, and was taken in by his uncle Josef Reicha, who was a cellist living and working in Germany. It was here that he began studying the piano, oboe and flute, and also began learning German and French. While playing for the Bonn Court Orchestra, he met the young Ludwig van Beethoven, who played the viola in the orchestra, and they also attended university lectures together.

After leaving Bonn, he lived in Hamburg and Vienna, where he was studied with Joseph Haydn, enjoyed the favour of the imperial court, and got to know many of the outstanding composers of the time.

Paris Conservatoire

In 1808, Anton Reicha took up permanent residence in Paris. He joined the Paris Conservatoire as a full-time professor, and was eventually appointed Director. Many of the most important French composers of the Romantic period studied with him, including Hector Berlioz, César Franck, Charles Gounod and Franz Liszt. Reicha’s writings on music theory have been widely published, including his studies of melody, counterpoint and fugue.

The works of Anton Reicha

Anton Reicha composed a wide variety of music, and his piano works, chamber music for wind and strings, orchestral music and sacred music are particularly sought after.
