From the Cloth to the Curtain

At the age of 25, Antonio Vivaldi was ordained a priest, but had to give up his ecclesiastical work after a few years due to health reasons. His next position was as a violin, viola and cello teacher at an orphanage for girls in Venice. In 1719, he took over direction of the orchestra, and under his baton, the orchestra enjoyed success and fame, and attracted visitors from all over Europe.

It was at the orphanage that Vivaldi composed most of his violin concertos, including the world-famous Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. He also tried his hand at composing operas, but to little avail, so he left Venice in 1740, seeking new inspiration in Vienna. It was only 10 months after his arrival in Vienna, that he died.

Much of Vivaldi’s work fell into obscurity for a long time after his death. It was not until 1926 that research began, and over 75 psalms, motets and solo cantatas were re-discovered.
