Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959) was one of the most independent and imaginative composers of the Classical Modern Period. His music is characterized by broad tonality, rhythmic finesse, and a great wealth of timbre, and is great example of the warmth and richness of Czech Classical Music. Browse our sheet music and scores, and explore all Martinů’s marvellous works today!
Martinů’s father was a tower keeper, so Bohuslav grew up in an apartment in a church tower in the Moravian town of Polička. The view from the tower, into the vastness of the Moravian landscape, can be heard in much of Martinů’s music, particularly in his Fantaisies Symphoniques, Nonet No.2, Concerto for Oboe & Chamber Orchestra and Variations on a Slovak Theme.
Martinů was not part of any composition school, but two of his few private students are among the most individual personalities in Czech music in the 20th century, Vítězslava Kaprálová and Jan Novák.
