His life
César Cui came from a Franco-Lithuanian family. His father came to Russia as a soldier in the Napoleonic army, and after the end of the campaign, settled in Vilnius. César Cui followed in his father’s footsteps, and also pursued a military career, he taught at military academies and attained the title of professor and the rank of general.
His work
Cui wrote ten operas, and his works for symphony orchestra, his chamber works and his piano music are also all performed frequently. Like many other composers of the period and region, Cui uses typically Russian folk themes and oriental musical motifs.
