“My imagination can picture no fairer happiness than to continue living for art.” Clara Schumann (1819-1896)
The German internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and composer Clara Schumann is considered one of the most important female composers of all time. Browse our sheet music and scores, and explore all the wonderful works of Clara Schumann today!
It was clear from a very early age that Clara Schumann was an immense talent. She was intensively encouraged, nurtured and trained by her father Friedrich Wieck, and the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I described Clara as a "miracle girl".
Her husband Robert Schumann valued her as an equal composer, and supported all her artistic endeavours. After his death in 1856, Clara did not manage to compose many new works. To finance her large family, she gave concerts, taught and acted as editor of Robert Schumann’s complete works, published by Breitkopf & Härtel. She was colleagues and close friends with Johannes Brahms, who was one of her husband’s prodigies.
Clara Schumann’s compositional style was considered very innovative, with rhythmic freedom, many sudden key changes, and harmony rich in dissonances. Most of her works are for piano solo or with piano accompaniment. Her most important works include Clara Schumann’s Three Romances for Piano and Three Romances for Violin & Piano by Clara Schumann, the Clara Schumann Songs op.12, op.13 & op.23 and regarded by many as her greatest masterpiece, Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G Minor.
