Bortniansky grew up in Ukraine, and at the age of seven, he was accepted into the St. Petersburg court choir. He sang not only sacred music, but he also took part in Italian opera, where he sang female roles, as was the custom of the time.
From 1769 to 1779 Bortniansky resided in Italy, where he explored Italian opera and polyphony. It was here that he developed his unique style, which combines Italian melody, Western polyphony and traditional Russian roots. He also composed three operas in Italy.
After his return to Russia, Tsar Paul I appointed Bortniansky director of the tsarist court choir in St. Petersburg. Under his direction, the choir became a truly top-class ensemble.
