Eric Whitacre studied composition and choral conducting at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, where he was introduced to the world of choral singing. Whitacre also studied at the renowned Juilliard School of Music in New York, and he currently lives in London.
Eric Whitacre is one of today’s most popular contemporary choral composers, and many of his works are part of the core repertoire for European and American ensembles word wide. Whitacre likes to use colour as a means of expression, and he is sometimes even classified as a Neo-Impressionist. His compositions usually have a tonal basis and a clear rhythmic structure.
In addition to choral works, Whitacre is a keen advocate of brass music, and his compositions for electronic instruments are also very popular. Together with Hans Zimmer, he composed and performed part of the soundtrack for the film Pirates of the Caribbean.
