Friedemann Winklhofer first studied pharmacy, then organ, piano and conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. Further studies led him to Paris to Jean Guillou. He began his career in 1977 as Karl Richter’s assistant with the Munich Bach Choir. In 1988 and 1990, at the personal request of Leonard Bernstein, he took part in various of his recordings and concerts.
As a sought-after continuo player and soloist, Friedemann Winklhofer has worked with many renowned orchestras and conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Sir Georg Solti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Krzysztof Penderecki, Marcello Viotti, Roger Norrington, Kent Nagano, Zubin Mehta, Semyon Bychkov, Franz Welser-Möst and Yehudi Menuhin. Concert tours, numerous CD and television productions as well as appearances at international festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Melbourne Festival, accompany his career. In 2008 he inaugurated the Klais organ with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and Copland’s Symphony for Organ and Orchestra at the newly built National Grand Theater in Beijing. He is currently working on an Urtext edition of all organ works by César Franck as editor for Henle-Verlag.
Friedemann Winklhofer is professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, organ expert at the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising and custodian of the Klais organ at the Munich Philharmonic.
