The American composer, pianist and conductor George Gershwin wrote all sorts of works, for many different musical forces. His symphonic masterpiece from 1924 Rhapsody in Blue is written for piano and orchestra, and beautifully combines true classical composition with lots of exciting jazz elements. He also stretched the boundaries of classical theatre with his 1935 jazz opera Porgy and Bess.
Gershwin was also well-known for his songs, which are among the best Jazz Standards of the era, including Summertime, I Got Rhythm, Fascinating Rhythm, and many, many more.
He is one of a long line of brilliant composers who died long before their time. Shortly before his diagnosis, and subsequent death due to a brain tumour at the age of 38, Gershwin said to his sister Frances:
“I don’t feel I’ve scratched the surface. I don’t think of money any more. I just want to work on American music: symphonies, chamber music, opera. This is what I really want to do. I don’t feel I’ve even scratched the surface.”
