The French composer Gérard Grisey was a student of Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux. In 1973, together with his colleagues Tristan Murail, Hugues Dufourt and Michaël Levinas, he founded the group "L’Itinéraire", which developed the "Musique spectrale" (spectralism) - a music that emphasizes overtone structures.
From 1986 he was professor of instrumentation and composition at the Conservatoire de Musique Paris. His students include Arnulf Herrmann, Mark Andre, Fabien Lévy and Magnus Lindberg.
