“I am in a prison: one wall is the avant-garde, the other wall is the past, and I want to escape.”
The Austro-Hungarian composer György Sándor Ligeti (1923 - 2006) is considered one of the most influential composers of 20th century Contemporary Music. His compositional style is characterised by micropolyphony, microtonality and / or polymetrics, with the aim of bending the sense of time and space.
Ligeti’s music was made known to a wider audience by the films of Stanley Kubrick, in particular 2001: A Space Odyssey.
