His Life & Work

Isaac Albéniz was a child prodigy. From a young age he performed many highly acclaimed piano concerts, first in Spain and later abroad. He studied at the Brussels Conservatoire and was a student of Felipe Pedrell, who introduced him to the world of national music. Gradually he turned more and more to composition, writing mainly Albéniz’ Piano Works.

From 1885, the nationalistic character of Albéniz’ works began to come to the for, particularly in his well-known 1886 Suite Española. His idea of a "creating national music with a universal accent" was realized with Iberia. A work admired by Claude Debussy and many other great composers.

In his second nationalistic wave, Albéniz adopted a style he called ’Alhambrismo’. Rhythms of Spanish folk dances, the Phrygian scale and traditional ornamentation, as well as elements of Cante Jondo and provincial Spanish folk music dominated his music. Particularly in his Concierto fantástico en la menor op. 78.
