Jan Van der Roost was born in Duffel, Belgium in 1956. At a very young age, prominent names in the brass music scene inspired him to compose. He studied trombone, music history and music education in Leuven, and later conducting and composition in Ghent and Antwerp.
He currently teaches at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, and is a visiting professor at the Shobi Institute of Music in Tokyo, at the University of Arts in Nagoya and at Senzoku Gakuen in Kawasaki. In addition to being a prolific composer, he is also a frequent panelist, lecturer, workshop leader and guest conductor.
Today, Van der Roost only writes works on commission, and they cover a wide range of ensemble and orchestral forms. He composes a great deal for wind instruments, but among other things, he also wrote oratorios, choral works, a cantata, a song cycle, a symphony, a children’s opera and solo works with and without accompaniment.
Jan Van der Roost’s best-known works include “Toccata Festiva”, “From Ancient Times”, “Rikudim”, “Arsenal” and “Stonehenge”.
