At the age of eleven, Rutter experienced choral singing for the first time, and it sparked a love for music that never left him. At Highgate School, he was a member of the school choir, which was one of the best in Britain. He studied music at Clare College, Cambridge, and later, between 1975 and 1979, he was head of music. After the success of Gloria, and the subsequent commissions, he decided to devote himself entirely to his composition.
Rutter formed the Cambridge Singers in 1981, an ensemble primarily focused on recording his music on his own recording label, Collegium Records.
He travels the world as a guest conductor and lecturer. His most successful works include “Mass of the Children” and choral settings such as “The Lord bless you and keep you”. He has received many international awards for his musical work, including a CBE, “Commander of the Order of the British Empire”.
