The French composer Lili Boulanger was the sister of respected composer and composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. They came from a highly respected Parisian family. She moved in Paris’s most prestigious musical circles. She was mentored, influenced, and championed by elite composers such as Charles Gounod, Jules Massenet and Camille Saint-Saëns. Both her organ teacher Louis Vierne, and her composition teacher Gabriel Fauré were friends of the family. After fainting while performing in the 1912 competition, Lili Boulanger won the 1913 Grand Prix de Rome, the most acclaimed composition award of the time, becoming the first female winner in its 110-year history. Lili suffered poor health her whole life, and she eventually succumbed to tuberculosis at the young age of 25.
