Ludvig Mathias Lindeman was a Norwegian composer and folk song collector. The son of organist Ole Andreas Lindeman studied theology and music. He became organist in Kristiania in 1846 and singing teacher at the Theological Seminary in 1849. In 1883, together with his son Peter Byrnie Lindeman, he founded the Norwegian Academy of Music, from which the Kristiania Conservatory emerged in 1894.
Lindeman composed preludes and fugues for the organ as well as songs. He also published the folk song collection Ældre og nyere norske Fjeldmelodier, of which twelve volumes were published between 1853 and 1863. A follow-up volume was published in 1867 and a revised edition in 1874. It contained sung melodies as well as melodies played on Hardanger fiddle and Langeleik, which Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen used in their works.
