Niels Wilhelm Gade is an impressive example of the cultural exchange that took place between Denmark and Germany in the nineteenth century. Gade left behind a varied and wide-ranging oeuvre. His early works, roughly up to Comala (op. 12), are noteworthy for their “Nordic tone” and the inspiration they drew from dramatic literature.
