Richard Simm first came to the attention of the public at the age of 16, performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in his home city of Newcastle in northern England. He studied first at the Royal College of Music in London with Bernard Roberts and Kendall Taylor, then at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Munich with Erik Then-Bergh, winning many awards at this time - especially for his playing of Chopin.
While still a student in London, he was the only British contestant to win a prize at the Third Leeds International Piano Competition. Simm has since performed all over the world, and was resident pianist at the University of Wales for nine years, as well as Visiting Professor of Piano at the University of Illinois for three years. His work as an arranger for two pianos has won him international renown, and he has received several awards in this field from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
