“The bandoneon groans, deep and grumpy in the verbena of the night. In my heart your shrill sound deepens my sorrow.” – Enrique Cadícamo

Along with the accordeon, the concertina, and the Styrian harmonica, this small instrument belongs to the diatonic accordion family. These instruments originate in Germany in the mid-19th century, from where they conquered the world. With the arrival of European immigrants at the Rio de la Plata, the bandoneon played a key role in the mixing of cultures and the rise of new musical styles such as the Tango and the Milonga.
Like other instruments in the family, the bandoneon has alternating tones. This means that opening and closing the bellows produces different sounds when the same key is pressed.
