Robert Sherwood "Bob" Haggart, who grew up in Long Island, learned banjo, guitar, piano, trumpet and double bass as an autodidact. Between 1935 and 1942 he played bass and arranged for Bob Crosby's big band. For Crosby he composed the songs "What's New?" and "South Rampart Street Parade".
