Flutist Marilyn Mead won the prestigious Pompidou Fellowship after premiering this sonata in 1983 in Carnegie Hall. This traditional sonata has a Theme and Variations first movement, a slow and somber second movement and a jubilant third movement which recalls the first movement in its exciting final bars.
