Ave Maria – Sheet Music & Scores

The “Ave Maria” is one of the core church prayers, and along with the Lord’s Prayer, it is probably the most widely known in the church today. It is one of the Marian Antiphons, and the list of Ave Marias composed over the centuries is long. Even though many of these works are rarely used in the church today, many can still be heard in concert, and the most well-known of which come mainly from the 19th century.

A little more about the Ave Maria

One of the most famous Ave Marias today was never actually intended to be performed in church; the Ave Maria by Franz Schubert bares the title, but does not follow the liturgical text of the Ave Maria. He used a German translation of a sentimental poem to the Virgin Mary by Walter Scott, author of the novel “Ivanhoe”, which was exchanged early on for the Latin text of the Ave Maria.

Even the famous Ave Maria by Charles Gounod was not intended for the liturgy, and the first arrangement offers a now rather unknown sound, with solo violin, six-part choir and full orchestra.
