The Music of Johan de Meij
After Venetian Collection, Johan de Meij was once again inspired by famous paintings - this time by three great Dutch and Flemish masters from around 1650: the Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn, the Love Letter by Johannes Vermeer and Prinsjesdag by Jan Steen. In the opening section of this work, the shooters from Rembrandt's Night Watch pay their respects with a solo trombone. In contrast, the woman in Vermeer's love letter plays lyrical lute music. The third picture shows a crowded tavern on Prinsjesdag: there is drinking, singing and (increasingly weird) music. An epilogue with material from the first part rounds off the work.
