The Diatonic Accordion is historically connected to folk culture, and differs from the chromatic Accordion in that it has a limit on the number of keys in which it can play.
Another special feature of most Diatonic Accordions (also called the Diatonic Hand Harmonica) is that they have an alternating treble, which means that the chromatic produces the same sound with the same button, while the diatonic produces different notes when the bellows are opened and closed. This does not apply to all Diatonic Accordions, because there are many different variants, the Russian Garmon, the Irish, the Scottish and the Slovenian Accordions, the Melodeon, the Trikitixa, the Styrian Harmonica, the Swiss Schwyzerörgeli" name " and many, many more.
Also, the arrangement of the buttons is often very confusing, as each Diatonic Accordion has its own system, and within each system, these accordions can have anywhere from two to four rows of buttons. For example, the Styrian harmonica usually varies between three and four more straight forward rows of buttons.
