Description

In this piece, commissioned by the Bruzolo Philharmonic Society to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its founding, the composer wanted to describe the path of cultural growth that characterises not only this association but also many other European bands. The work is structured in three movements. The first movement opens with a fanfare, a solemn tribute to the important social role that bands play in their community. This is immediately followed by the 'Allegro' which, with a melodic theme, is intended to represent the association's journey over the years. The same theme is then given to the bass sections, to describe the firmness with which the band has continued with the projects it has initiated. The introduction of an irregular rhythm with a new theme, on the other hand, is intended to represent the many difficulties encountered along the way, the overcoming of which is symbolised by the return of the main theme. The second movement is a reminder that, during World War II, the activity of many bands was suspended and everyone was faced with sad and difficult times. The movement opens with the grave instruments preparing the solo of the oboe, which represents the pain of war. This theme is then taken up by all the woodwinds, as if to signify that the pain is spreading and affecting the entire population. But here the flute introduces a new theme, in a major key, symbolising hope, the hope of a world without war, and the theme is taken up by the whole band in a "forte" dynamic. The movement ends with a brief sad coda: a remembrance for all the friends the war has taken away. The third movement develops on a tarantella, a dynamic representation of the present. Study, joy and fun are the elements that draw the band members into incessant activity, an energy that unites all musicians to do what they enjoy most: Music.
