A Brief History of British Choral Music

Britain has always been at the forefront of choral music throughout the ages. It began with the Folk Music of the British Isles and Gregorian Chant of the Medieval Monasteries, and the Renaissance Period saw both secular Madrigals and Sacred Music flourish. The Church of England was pivotal for Sacred Music during the Baroque Period and the Classical Period saw choral music grace Royal Courts and concert halls all through the land. The Male Voice Choirs of the Welsh mines, and the great 19th Century English Choral Festivals played a big role in the development of British choral music in the Romantic Period, and it developed through the 20th Century to the present day, where British choral music has conquered all musical styles, genres and platforms.

Today, according to The Big Choral Census conducted in 2017 by Voices Now, there are over 2.14 million Britons who regularly engage in choral singing, over 20,000 vocal groups currently active, and over 7,000 registered choirs. Among the most famous are the King’s Singers, the Monteverdi Choir and The Sixteen.
