“The darker the times, the brighter the theatre lights have to shine.” The Comedian Harmonists
The Classic German UFA films, and their dazzling stars, shaped a whole musical era. Musicals, operetta and revue films boomed in Germany in the 30s and 40s, and were a welcome relief from the difficulty of day to day life, and many of the hit songs from the era are still performed widely today.
Zarah Leander, Marlene Dietrich and the Comedian Harmonists were the most famous stars of UFA films. During this time, some of the most beautiful German hits were written, including “Das ist die Berliner Luft”, “Wenn der weiße Flieder wieder blüht” and “Kauf dir einen bunten Luftballon”.
