One can say unequivocally that local folklore is the basis for all Hungarian music. Hungarian folk music is an integral part of national identity, and it also plays an important role in modern Hungarian music. Prominent choral composers such as Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók (as well as Leoš Janáček) collected and catalogued folk songs and were often inspired by them in their work. These composers have been instrumental in preserving the richness of folk tradition, at a time of great social change, in both rural and urban areas.
Alongside secular folk music, sacred choral music was cultivated in churches and cathedrals throughout Hungary. Hungarian sacred music was composed in the spirit of the Central European musical tradition, and due to its proximity, was often inspired by Vienna, the capital of Austria-Hungary. Along with other Hungarian choral composers, Franz Liszt composed a great deal of choral music, especially in the last 20 years of his life.
In the 19th century, Hungarian composers also enriched the theatre world, notably the composers Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kálmán, whose operas and operettas are still hugely popular today.
