From as early as the Middle Ages, choral singing flourished in Italy. At first, Italian choral music was solely sacred, however, in the Renaissance Period, choral music began to branch out to the secular world, and through the works of Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice, complex polyphony developed, and even works for multiple choirs began to emerge.
Choral music soon took to the stage, and quickly become a fundamental part of Italian Opera, and also played a key role in Italian Folk Music, showcased by the famous Alpini choirs. In the 20th century, there was a big neo-Renaissance revival in Italy, and choral singing is as strong today as it was through the ages.
