As part of the year 2023 dedicated to Swiss wind band literature, the Swiss Wind Band Association commissioned Gauthier Dupertuis to write a new orchestration of Stephan Jaeggi's Overture in E flat major. However, an update of the orchestration was necessary for the interpretation of this work with modern orchestras. The orchestration proposed by Gauthier Dupertuis, who wanted to remain faithful to the original while meeting current idiomatic standards, will allow contemporary orchestras to interpret this piece of classical-romantic inspiration.
Stephan Jaeggi was a composer and conductor born in 1903 to a large family in Fulenbach (Canton Solothurn). He began playing the clarinet at the age of 13, studied music at the conservatory in Basel and completed military recruit school. After graduating, he conducted several wind orchestras. In this role, but also as a composer, Stephan Jaeggi was able to celebrate many successes. His early death in 1957 brought Stephan Jaeggi's creative life to an early end. All the more reason why his work lives on today with unbroken vigour.
