Songs of Liberation entstand aus Anlass des 70. Jahrestages der Befreiung der Niederlande im Auftrag der Königlichen Militärkapelle Johan Willem Friso (Dirigent: Major Tijmen Botma). Eingerahmt wird das Stück von drei Valerius-Liedern aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. In ihnen wird der Widerstand gegen die spanischen Herrschaft beschrieben. Die Kantate beginnt mit dunklen Klängen, die die Unterdrückung symbolisieren, um im Finale Platz für Befreiung und Licht zu machen. Das Stück endet mit dem Lied Gelukkig Is Het Land (Glücklich ist das Land).
