The history of notated music in South America begins with the early European music introduced by the first colonies. The traditional native music of South America was not popular among the new settlers, and music composed in the New World had to adhere to the traditions of the Christian church, and the rules of the European canon.
Since it was mainly Spanish composers such as Hernando Franco who composed in South America, the South American Baroque and Renaissance music did not differ significantly from the Spanish music of the time.
Over time, native South American music began to integrate itself into the South American musical world, and composers of great quality began to emerge, such as José Mauricio Nunes García, and South American music began to take on more of a native, traditional style and character.
A good example of the fusion of Christian music and traditional Latin America Music are Latin American Christmas Carols for Choir, and there is also a wealth of secular South American music to be discovered.
