In splendoribus sanctorum is a communion motet for Nativity Midnight Mass. The obbligato trumpet (or organ) performs completely independently of the choir. The four obbligato passages are cued by the conductor during the first singing of the motet. During subsequent repetitions the trumpeter (organist) may vary the obbligato passages by jumping from line to line or from phrase to phrase ad libitum, ending the piece alone with cadential figures from any of the four passages.
