A Mix of Many Genres

The Motown label had over 70 top ten records in the Billboard charts and over 100 top ten hits in the 1960s. Now with over 45 individual labels, Motown was to become the largest media group in the USA owned by a black American.

The legendary team of authors and producers Holland-Dozier-Holland laid the foundations for the Motown sound: complex rhythms in 8/8 time, which emphasized the odd quavers, thereby creating a great swing character to dance to.

There was also a prominent percussion section and a lively bass. Organically linked to the call and response principle, an extraordinary mixture of Gospel and Pop came together to creat the Motown sound.
