Other than in Armenia, the Russian Orthodox church did not allow musical instruments, which is why Russian church choirs always sing a capella. Many of the greatest Russian composers wrote a cappella choral works, and one key feature of Russian choral music is the deep bass voices, the basso profundos, known in Russia as the Oktavists, who were renowned for their extremely low range.
