Spirituals are bible songs which sprung up in the USA in the 17th century, sung by African slaves at work or at worship, and are a musical expression of suffering, and of hope. Most of the well-known spirituals like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” or“ Go down, Moses” are scenes from the Old Testament.
In contrast, gospel music tends to explore faith and love, and has more of an emphasis on the New Testament. Gospel incorporates elements of Jazz and Blues. While spirituals are considered to be based on folk music, gospel is mostly through composed, and the Choir is often accompanied by a band.
