A Tale of One City

In the 19th century, extensive collections of carols begun to be put together. The most important today is The Oxford Book of Carols, which is present in almost every English church at Christmas time. It has appeared in various forms over the years, such as “The New Oxford Book of Carols”, the “Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols” and “The Oxford Book of Flexible Carols”.

Newer and more modern composers have also taken up the carol-call, outstanding examples are Vaughan Williams Christmas Carols, Britten Christmas Carols and Rutter Christmas Carols.
