Something Old & Something New

Although the treble recorder was popular in the Renaissance Period, the lion’s share of solo recorder works in the Baroque Period were written for treble recorder, where it really flourished. Due to the wonderful resurgence of historical performance practice in the modern era, the treble recorder has experienced a new heyday since the beginning of the 20th century, and is still very popular today, both as a solo instrument, and in recorder ensembles.

A Transposing Instrument?

The treble recorder was originally tuned in ’G’, but has mainly been tuned in ’F’ since the Baroque Period, and it sounds a fifth lower than the descant recorder, the standard recorder for beginners and amateurs. It is quite striking that music for the treble recorder, in contrast to many other transposing instruments, is mostly notated in ’C’. It is then up to the player to transpose!
