Ukrainian Folk Music

Folk has always played an important role in Ukrainian music. Ukraine’s folk music varies greatly from region to region, in the east it is influenced by Russia, and in the west by its Slavic and Baltic neighbours, Slovakia, Poland and Lithuania.

The Cossack tradition is also features greatly in Ukrainian folk music, with many epic lyric stories depicting the heroic deeds of the Cossacks. The golden age of Ukrainian folk was the 16th-18th centuries, when many great folk songs and a great deal of new instrumental folk music emerged.

Ukrainian Sacred Music

There are many comparisons to be drawn between Sacred Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox music, and it is an important source of inspiration for many contemporary composers today. Since as early as the 10th century, choral singing has had a strong and unfaltering tradition in Ukraine. It began with monophonic, plagal chant developed from the Greek, Byzantine, Bulgarian modal system, and developed through the Polish and Western European polyphonic chant in the 16th century. Choral music in Ukraine saw its heyday in Kiev in the 18th and 19th centuries.
