Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Suppe Demelli, better known as Franz von Suppé (1819-1895), was the son of a Belgian father and an Austrian mother. In total he wrote some 30 operettas and Steven Verhaert selected Die schöne Galathea for his arrangement. This splendid overture is a real gem for lovers of the operetta style which is sometimes (unfairly) looked down upon.
