The Missa Gratias agimus tibi by Jan Dismas Zelenka was composed in 1730, a little before the Missa Sancti Josephi (Carus 27.082), and is thus already close to Zelenka's late style. As a festive mass, it is scored with trumpets and timpani, which, in the spirit of courtly splendour, are not silent even in the Kyrie. 17 mostly shorter movements, each with a very different character, bear witness to Zelenka's inventiveness and make the 30-minute mass an exciting experience.
Scoring: Soli SSAATB, Coro SATB, 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 4 Tr (o 2 Tr), Timp, 2 Vl, Va, Bc
