“I am hitting my head against the walls, but the walls are giving way.” Gustav Mahler (1860–1911)
Gustav Mahler is one of the great, visionary composers of the Art Nouveau era, who bridged the gap between the late romantic and classical modern periods. Browse our sheet music and scores, and explore all his innovative works today!
With each of his symphonies he set out to ’build a world’. Most of his contemporaries did not understand this, his works were considered too long, overloaded and confused. But Mahler had great confidence in his compositions: ’My time will come.’
And he was absolutely right, the Nine Mahler Symphonies, Mahler’s Lied von der Erde and the Art Song by Mahler are all part of today’s standard repertoire for orchestras, conductors and singers worldwide. The 10th, The Unfinished Symphony by Mahler, only consists of one finished movement, and is often performed today, either alone as a single movement, or in an arrangement made from Mahler’s sketches.
Like his antipode Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler is considered a master of orchestration. Mahler made a career primarily as an opera conductor, and as director of the Vienna Court Opera, which is now the Vienna State Opera, he set exemplary standards which are admired, and upheld to this day.
Scores and piano reductions of his works can be found printed by the biggest publishers today, as Universal Edition – Works by Mahler in Vienna, and also Breitkopf & Härtel – Works by Mahler, who also started a new edition of the symphonies in 2019.
