Sinfonietta No. 1 won first prize in the Swiss Brass Band Association's 2023 composition competition. Various melodic themes and rhythmic motifs run through the entire work. They combine with the numerous dynamic effects to create a certain unity from the beginning to the end of this competition piece.
The technical and melodic difficulties offer various soloists the opportunity to show off their virtuosity and musicianship in the five sections, which are played without interruption. The first slow and mysterious section (misterioso) contrasts with the following section (energico), which is based on an ostinato and creates both a build-up and tension leading to the third section mesto (mournful).
Several cadenzas and numerous dissonances are heard in the subsequent lento. The transition (energico) finally announces the fifth section, a ternary and fast con fuoco. This last section leads to a final climax.
